Fun Fact #1:
Which one of the activities below has Brenda NOT done?
A) Created a fashion line
B) Solo traveled by motor cycle
C) Flown to Mexico
D) Eaten grubs
Answer: C-- "I have never flown to Mexico. I've driven across the border, but that's it! Yes, the others are true. My first major was fashion designing and I created one 5 piece line from start to finish. As for the motorcycle, I had a 750 Yamaha for 11 years I used to commute 90 miles (one way) from my house to school, 3 times a week for 2 years. It was awesome! And, yes...I have eaten grubs. Well, I should say "grub" as in "one". I had this one, big, fat, white, juicy, grub during my trip to Papua New Guinea. The trip to the country was remarkable, but I definitely have a one grub limit."(smile)
Fun Fact #2:
When Brenda was little (about age 6) what did she want to be when she grew up?
A) Singer
B) Pianist
C) Airline Stewardess
D) Artist/Painter
Answer: C-- "Yep...my grandmother gave me a pair of silver wings and I believed I had found my calling in life. It was very short lived, but I was extremely serious about my career choice for about a month! Everything else I did naturally and never really thought about it as a possible career choice."
Fun Fact #3:
Which experience(s) has/have Brenda had during her life time?
A) Made coil pots with "Maria" the famous Native American potter
B) Frequented an Indian Reservation
C) Exposed to Czechoslovakian culture
D) All of the above
Answer: D-- "all of the above. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico where my family still lives. It was quite unique to be raised in one location since my father was in the Air Force, but it was our destiny none the less. My mother is full Czech, so during family reunions I would sit and listen to the older family members speak Czech and try to figure out what they were saying. My mother had fun stories about miscommunication with my father after they met. Being raised in Albuquerque, I was exposed to strong Native American influence since we were very close to a reservation. My 5th grade Sunday School teacher taught school on the reservation and would take her granddaughter and me out there to put up bulletin boards. I think back to it now and realize how different the life was on the reservation. Being so young, I mostly remember the surroundings and a thick sense of sadness. But, the most wonderful thing I remember was being taught how to make pottery from THE Maria Martinez in about the 4th grade. She came to our class and demonstrated the coil method and I was entranced with the deep lines in her face, her beautiful traditional beaded clothes, and her jet-black hair. We hung on every word she taught through an interpreter. It was amazing! Marie Martinez was from the San Ildefonso Pueblo just about 30 minutes Northwest of Santa Fe. Her famous black on black pottery is known around the world and displayed in the biggest museums. Of course, that was not information we knew during our young experience, but something I treasure more and more every day."
